Here Is a Book

Oh, I loved making this book. Because, books!

A few years ago I was reading Zadie Smith’s essay Something to Do while sitting on the Hudson River. She has some beautiful lines about creativity (also about the everyday-ness of making things). Her essay got me thinking about bookmaking. Here is a Book is the story of one book, from that first inspiration all the way to a reader. The artist here is a combination of my grandmothers (one a writer, the other a painter). We see her first in a garden by the sea (in countryside inspired by Edward Hopper’s haunts in Cape Cod), then in her studio. Painting, editing, printing, delivery to a school, its library, and finally to a family and a child’s bedroom. The whole arc! I had such fun with this book, thinking about what makes books so important.
